When choosing a cassette, it is important to consider not only the number of teeth, but also the number of speeds, freehub standard, drivetrain compatibility and desired gear range.

How to Choose a Cassette?

  • Check the number of speeds supported by the drivetrain
  • Check the freehub standard: HG, Micro Spline, XD, XDR or Campagnolo N3W
  • Choose the appropriate tooth range
  • Check the rear derailleur's maximum capacity
  • Ensure chain and cassette compatibility
  • For sporty road riding, a narrower gear range may be preferred, while larger sprockets are useful for climbing

In Practice

The cassette determines a significant part of the rear gear range and therefore has a direct effect on how the bicycle performs on flat roads, climbs and off-road terrain. Even with the same number of speeds, an 11–28, 11–32 or 10–51 tooth cassette provides a very different gear range. When selecting a cassette, the rear derailleur, chain, freehub body and complete drivetrain should always be considered together.
