Bearing Grades

With bottom brackets, not only the standard and dimensions are important, but also the quality and material of the bearings. Depending on the application, load and desired performance, several versions are available.

Threaded or PressFit?

Threaded bottom brackets screw directly into the frame. The threaded system provides secure installation and generally makes bottom bracket servicing and replacement easier. BSA and T47 are among the most important modern threaded standards.

With PressFit systems, the bottom bracket is pressed directly into the appropriately sized bottom bracket shell of the frame. This includes standards such as BB30, PF30, BB86/BB92 and BB90/BB95. With these systems, it is particularly important to know the exact internal diameter and width of the frame's bottom bracket shell.

Various adapters and reducers make it possible to fit a crankset with a different spindle diameter to a specific frame standard. For example, certain BB30 and PF30 systems can be used with a 24 mm Shimano Hollowtech II crankset when the appropriate adapter is installed.

Sizing and Compatibility

Before purchasing a bottom bracket, it is worth checking:

1. Frame standard: BSA, T47, BB30, PF30, BB86/92, BBRight, BB90/95 etc.
2. Bottom bracket shell width: for example 68, 73, 86, 89.5, 92 mm or specific dimensions.
3. Bottom bracket shell internal diameter: for example 37, 41, 42 or 46 mm.
4. Crankset spindle diameter: for example 24 mm, SRAM GXP, SRAM DUB 28.99 mm or 30 mm.
5. Exact crankset and frame model: some manufacturers use proprietary or specific standards.

When selecting the correct bottom bracket, the combination of frame standard + shell width + spindle diameter must always be considered. Even within the same standard, different widths or spindle compatibility can exist.
